Behavioral and Emotional Disorders in Children and Adults

Adults

In 2022, 23.1% of US adults, or 59.3 million people, had a mental illness. This number was higher for women (26.4%) than men (19.7%). Young adults (18–25 years old) had the highest prevalence of mental illness at 36.2%.

Children

In 2018–2019, 13% of children ages 3–17 had a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition. Mental health conditions can begin in early childhood and become more common with age.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

About 1 in 10 children under 12 have ODD, with boys outnumbering girls by two to one. Children with ODD are often easily angered, have frequent temper tantrums, and are defiant towards authority figures.

Conduct Disorder (CD)

CD is the most common reason for children and young people (CYP) to be referred for psychological and psychiatric treatment. Most CYP with CD grow out of the disorder, but some develop antisocial personality disorder as adults.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD affects 3.6% of the US population, or 7.7 million adults. Women are five times more likely to be affected than men. Rape is the most likely trigger of PTSD.

Human Trafficking National Hotline

Human trafficking, often referred to as trafficking in persons, is a grave violation of human rights that has no place in society. It poses serious threats to national and economic security, erodes the rule of law, and devastates individuals and communities worldwide. At its core, it is a crime of exploitation, where traffickers gain financially by forcing victims into labor or commercial sex. This crime affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities across every region of the United States and beyond. With an estimated 27.6 million victims globally at any moment, human trafficking remains a widespread and urgent issue.
